Vlad Adam,
Graphic Designer.
Having to design something, anything, can be a tedious and daunting task. Having to design something that fits into the corporate identity of a company can be worse. When I got approached about designing the graphics to go into the smart car, at first I was a little shell shocked with the idea. This was because I did not really know where to start or where to look for inspiration. After a couple of minutes of freaking out I started to brain storm ideas. My first concept was to use the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid) when I had reached the end of my first concept I didn’t feel that the product was resolved and did not depict the message iFly is trying to get across as a company.
The next day I went back to the drawing board and stared brain storming again. I quickly came up with the idea that the car should not be a simple sticker logo stuck to the side, but something that will grab attention from a km's away. With this in mind I started designing again, the idea of a sky like theme made sense. The next problem I encountered was how to make the iFly logo and motto "click and fly" stand out, while still making it seem like a coherent within the theme, and not just something that has been slapped on. After redesigning I started making progress and knew I was on the right track towards a design which was looking more and more resolved, I finally came up with a fully resolved design on the third day that had everyone’s tick of approval in the office. Once we agreed on a company to vynal wrap the car, I handed the artwork, and photoshoped files of where each 5 pieces of vynal should be placed on the car to them and in the following weeks I saw my creation cruising the streets of Surfers Paradise, and nearing areas.
As a designer seeing my thoughts/ideas/creations come to life on a real world canvas whether it is a car, website, billboard, magazine, or any other means of advertisement, is the best feeling in the world, knowing I am the creator of a real world products, that is something no one can take away from me. I am proud and happy to be the creator of the smart car graphics, and smile each time I see it driving around.
Best regards,
